Brunch, but Better

Ways to make brunch less complicated and more enjoyable!

Freshly squeezed orange juice and a pot of coffee in the making. Bacon sizzling on a cast-iron skillet. Pastries decorate the table on their pretty tiered trays. Personalized omelets served with the choice of either home fries or a fruit salad.

In our most recent S+C video, Carmelina prepared three simple recipes for you to enjoy at a proper brunch get-together or as meal prep for breakfast throughout the week. Each recipe was crafted with the intention of the meal being effortless and affordable.

Watch the video here to see Carmelina's instructions and follow along with the S+C recipe cards below. Comment if you tried making any of the recipes, and please let us know your thoughts or suggestions to make them even better.

Sunday brunch is something I look forward to all week (especially since I am not the one who has to prepare the meal). It is a rare indulgence made splendid by the delicious food, easy conversation and inviting atmosphere. However, not everyone is as thrilled at the prospect of a Sunday brunch. The idea of brunch sounds so tempting in theory, but it can be time-consuming and expensive when executed.

"Brunch, for me, is an extended breakfast that should be enjoyed whenever you have time properly to engage in cooking and eating." ---- Yotam Ottolenghi

Many tend to overcommit and plan to make elaborate dishes combined with fancy decorations. It those people who lack the true meaning of Sunday brunch - to have a cocktail before noon! No, well maybe, but in all seriousness, brunch should be a way to indulge in life's simpler things.

Five Ways to Simplify a Sunday Brunch

  1. Don't feel the need to make every item yourself. As much as we all want to show off our domestic abilities, it isn't always necessary and may even spoil your 's and your guests' enjoyment. We have all either attended a get-together where the host is busy in the kitchen or have been said host. Instead of everything being homemade, consider making only the specialty dishes and buying the rest from the store. For instance, make the omelettes fresh, but buy Pillsbury cinnamon rolls.

  2. Serve a set menu, rather than offering a buffet. Many people host a brunch and feel the need to make it an endless array of food. However, a set menu is more practical and affordable. This tip also applies drinks. If you will be offering alcohol at your next brunch, consider making one signature drink, rather than providing a full bar. Not only does it save you money, but you will also spend less time mixing drinks.

  3. Keep the decorations to a minimum. I know, coming from me, this advice may be a surprise, but a brunch does not need much. I would stick to fresh-cut flowers and fragrant fruits to decorate the table.

  4. Don't start brunch too early. Some decide to begin brunch at 9 am. However, postponing the event by an hour would better be suited as it gives you and your guests more time to prepare in the morning,

  5. Make clean up easy. The most daunting part of a Sunday brunch occurs when the guests leave. As the host, you are now left with an enormous amount of clean up. If you are not fortunate to own a dishwasher, consider using eco-friendly disposable dishware. Check out Eco Party Time for a full range of biodegradable tableware that is sure to make clean up a lot more manageable without hurting the environment!

Sincerely,

Sara
